DETROIT - At an undisclosed hospital in Detroit U.S. House of Representative Congressman John Conyers announced his retirement Wednesday afternoon with his attorney Arnold Reed and brother Nathan at his side.

“I am retiring today and want people to know how much I appreciate their undiminished support.” The bombshell announcement was anticipated and followed by the surprise endorsement by Conyers of his son John Conyers III to replace him.

Conyers announced his plans in a live radio broadcast on 102.7 on the Mildred Gaddis show. The statement comes in the wake of calls by his congressional colleagues to step down from office as charges of sexual harassment and abuse were made by female staff members.

The charges have been denied by Conyers, supporters have rallied for due process which may now be a moot point.

During the interview Conyers was asked about reaction to Minority Leader of the United States House of Representative Nany Pelosi abandoning him and whether other Congressional representatives who settled 7 million dollars in undisclosed lawsuits should be identified. Conyers answered with a strong and unequivocal yes “There should be complete disclosure.”

The impact on the family in shouldering the acquisitions was addressed, by Conyers who said health wise family is doing well, “We take things in stride, this goes with the game of polities we take what happens and deal with it and move on.” He said his wife, former Detroit City Council member Monica Conyers and his two sons are doing well, and aided by support of his brother Nathan Conyers.

As the longest serving member in the U.S. House of Representative, Conyers said his legacy of equality and justice will continued and pass and to his son. "My legacy can't be compromised or diminished in any way by what we're going through now,"
