  Shinola and Michigan Women's Foundation to host Influence 2018  Oct. 26 at Cobo Center

Forbes Media Detroit Bureau Chief to moderate discussion for this first-time event

DETROIT - Shinola and the Michigan Women’s Foundation have partnered to host a thought-provoking panel discussion Influence 2018—When Fashion Meets Digital: The Changing Face of Influence, on Thursday, October 26, from 11:30 AM-2:00 PM at Cobo Center. The influential national fashion and media focused panel will highlight opportunities for women to navigate the fashion world within the ever-evolving media landscape. Moderated by Joann Muller, Detroit Bureau Chief of Forbes Media, the panel will also include a strolling lunch and networking opportunity.

“New media has played a tremendous role in opening doors for entrepreneurs and business executives in the fashion world and beyond,” said Christina Chen, Shinola marketing director. “We are excited to bring together an outstanding panel of leaders from the industry to hear how they are leveraging new media to grow their brands and captivate a new audience of followers.”

Panelists include: Sophia Amoruso, Founder & CEO, Girlboss Media; Rajni Jacques, Fashion Director, Teen Vogue; Jaclyn Johnson, Founder & CEO, Create & Cultivate; and Katie Sturino, Founder, The 12ish Style and Megababe. Discussion topics will include opportunities to push creativity and build loyalty, engage brand following and strategic avenues to stay actively plugged-in.

“Bringing southeast Michigan women an opportunity to hear from top thought leaders is critical to the Foundation’s mission. Fashion continues to lead in the quest to employ new media to maximize business success. Regardless of their industry, attendees will learn how to rethink brand loyalty and relationship cultivation, two essential elements of success,” said Margaret Tallet, Michigan Women’s Foundation Chief Operating Officer.

About the panelists & moderator:
• Sophia Amoruso, Founder & CEO, Girlboss Media – Amoruso is the founder and CEO of Girlboss Media, which connects women to explore success on their own terms through content, community, and experiences. Her 2014 New York Times Bestseller #GIRLBOSS, which chronicled her early life as well as her experience as the CEO and founder of fashion empire Nasty Gal, was adapted into a scripted TV series that premiered on Netflix in 2017. Sophia recently rebooted her podcast, Girlboss Radio, where she interviews world-class girlbosses who have made their mark in creative, cultural, and business ventures to extract solid advice from the lessons they've learned along the way. She is also the author of Nasty Galaxy and the forthcoming Girlboss Workbook, out on October 24, 2017, and will host the second-ever Girlboss Rally on November 11, 2017 in NYC.

• Rajni Jacques, Fashion Director, Teen Vogue – Jacques attended Columbia University for a Master’s Degree in Journalism and has since built a fashion focused career, taking positions with Nylon Magazine, Glamour Magazine, Madewell, Racked and currently Teen Vogue. She sets a precedent for women’s fashion through independence and leadership in the corporate, fashion industry.

• Jaclyn Johnson, Founder & CEO, Create & Cultivate – Forbes 30 under 30, Johnson is the CEO and founder of Create & Cultivate, a wildly popular online platform and conference for women who want to create and cultivate the career of their dreams. Create & Cultivate hosts conferences nationwide where thousands of women gather to hear from noteworthy CEO’s, content creators and celebrities. Past speakers include Chelsea Handler, Jessica Alba, Nicole Richie and Gloria Steinem. Known for their sold-out events and online platform which offers career and life advice for modern millennial women, Create & Cultivate has amassed a sought-after demographic which draws global brands like Microsoft, Chase and Marriott as sponsors.

• Joann Muller, Forbes Media Detroit Bureau Chief, Panelist Moderator – Muller is a professional writer with a heavy focus on industrial innovation and the global auto industry. She has been on the auto beat for more than 20 years at Forbes, Business Week and the Detroit Free Press. Aside from the auto industry, Muller also monitors “American Heartland” – manufacturing and agriculture.

• Katie Sturino, Founder, The 12ish Style & Megababe – A size 12(ish) New Yorker who believes great style can look chic at any size. Sturino started the12ishstyle.com to introduce girls like her who wear sizes 12-18 to fashion forward brands across extended and plus sizes. She is also the “momager” of celebrity dog, Toast (@toastmeetsworld).
