SAN FRANCISCO - This month Apple unveiled the latest iPhone with great fanfare at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco to a very enthusiastic audience. Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced not only the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, but the Watch Series 2, the next gen wearable to last year’s Apple Watch.

Most notable and talked about, Apple has ditched the headphone jack on both iPhone models, instead connecting its new AirPods via wireless "Lightning cable". In doing so, the company is betting that its long time loyal fans will convert to the new wireless headphones - or, for those who love wired earbuds, they will be able to plug into the iPhone's power port, with a new adapter.

The redesigned earbuds - with cord - will be included with the new iPhones. Also in the box: an adapter consisting of two plugs connected by a short length of cable, which will connect older headphones to the charging port.

Apple says that their AirPods will deliver up to 5 hours of listening time on one charge and more than 24 hours of total listening time with the custom-designed charging case. (Photo by Apple)

Apple is trying to wane consumers off the cord with their wireless headphone technology. They're hoping the effort will catch on. "The reason to move on is courage," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing. "The courage to move on and do something new that will benefit all of us." The wireless "AirPods" will sell for an extra $160.

Another big feature on the 7 Plus is a 2x optical zoom. You can tap an onscreen button to use a digital zoom that doesn’t move, the camera merely enlarges the pixels in each photo for a bigger view.

The new phones come with the longest battery life ever on an iPhone. They say that you can now get an average of 2 hours more out of the regular iPhone 7 and up to 1 hour more with the iPhone 7 Plus.

The iPhone 7 Plus remains the longer lasting of the two, with a larger battery. While you get around 40 hours of wireless audio playback on the iPhone 7, on the iPhone 7 Plus you get some 60 hours, and 3G talk time is also substantially longer on the iPhone 7 Plus: 21 hours vs 14 hours on the iPhone 7.

Both phones include support for up to 25 LTE bands, for the best worldwide roaming in the industry, and LTE Advanced for three times faster data rates than iPhone 6 at up to 450 Mbps.

iPhone 7 offers the most powerful chip ever in a smartphone. The new A10 Fusion chip uses an all-new architecture that enables faster processing when you need it, and the ability to use even less power when you don’t. And with the longest battery life ever in an iPhone, you can work at twice the speed of iPhone 6 and still enjoy more time between charges.

Cutting off the 16GB storage size, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 256GB options.

The iPhone 7 has reached a refreshed level of design and precision. The jet black finish is like nothing produced before by the company. The phones have a very similar design to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. However Apple has changed the layout of the slightly-unsightly antenna lines so that they no longer cut across the rear case.

The enclosure is splash and water resistant. The Home button is completely reengineered. And with a new unibody design that’s seamless to the touch, iPhone 7 feels as amazing as it looks.

"Smartphone advancements are slowing down as the market is maturing, so minor things like look and feel are getting more attention. Smartphone makers are also having trouble dazzling consumers with new advances, but researchers figure consumers will appreciate the faster chip and other improvements once they try the new iPhones, and won't worried about any backlash over elimination of the hardware jack.

Choose iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus then pre-order now through your carrier or buy at an Apple Store beginning September 16.
