DETROIT
-
Detroit
Free
Press/Flagstar
Marathon
participants
ran the
new
course
on
Sunday
with
rave
reviews.
The 2008
marathon
course
design
concept
included
several
new
elements.
The
Detroit
riverfront and
downtown
entertainment
districts
were
favorites
for
spectators
watching
the
race.
The
course
retained
much of
the
popular
route of
last
year’s
design.
The
route
included:
Gateway
to
Canada,
Runnin’
the
River-and
Below,
Detroit
RiverWalk,
Belle
Isle
Park-McArthur
Bridge
and the
Detroit
Windsor
Tunnel.
“Designing
a
world-class
international
marathon
course
is a
hugely
rewarding
and
challenging
experience,”
said
Patricia
Ball,
Detroit
Free
Press/Flagstar
Marathon
director.
“We view
course
design
with a
dual
objective
of
making a
great
route
for
runners."
The day
was
crisp
and
clear,
and
calm,
what
most
runners
considered
perfect
conditions
for a
race
that was
perfect
for
ages,
shapes
and
motivations.
And for
the
seventh
time in
eight
years,
Kenyan
David
Cheruiyot
won the
marathon.
The
38-year-old
took the
lead at
about
two
miles
and at
nine
miles
pulled
away to
run the
rest of
the 26.2
miles by
himself,
finishing
in
2:16:44.
Tetyana
Byelovol,
39, of
Ukraine
won the
women’s
marathon
with a
time of
2:40:17,
with
Mary
Akor,
32, of
Gardena,
Calif.,
in
second
in
2:41:32.
Sarah
Hinkley,
26, of
Hillsdale
was
third in
2:43:12.
Clint
Verran,
33, of
Rochester
finished
second
in
2:18:21.
Third
went to
Tommy
Greenless,
26, of
Walnut
Creek,
Calif.,
in
2:18:25.
While
the pros
ran for
money
and to
qualify
for
other
marathons,
the
majority
of
participants
ran it
for fun
and
personal
achievement.
