“Mental illness is woven into the fabric of our society, and is often identified as the cause for many societal ills. New Center Community Services Mental Health Agency commemorates National Mental Health Awareness Month in May

DETROIT, MI - May is National Mental Health Month and New Center Community Services (NCCS), a full service community mental health agency is continuing its mission to heighten awareness on mental health issues as it serves more than 7,000 patients annually. The Legislative and Community Breakfast held Monday, May 2, 2016 focused on the state of mental illness in our communities and the impact it has on families, neighborhoods, businesses and accessible services and funding.

A dialogue with elected officials, government agencies, faith-based organizations and businesses reinforces the much needed education and outreach efforts for those in need of diagnosis and treatment and to remove stigma of mental illness.

The Effects of Mental Illness:
One in four U. S. adults will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime, with depression and anxiety being the most common. Left undiagnosed and/or untreated, mental illness has a devastating impact on the overall health of the community, proving detrimental to families, schools, neighborhoods, public safety and more. Mental disorders affect every segment of society regardless of income level, job status, education, age, gender, ethnicity, culture or faith.

Undiagnosed, untreated mental illness in the workplace has a profoundly negative impact on the bottom-line of business productivity through absenteeism, inconsistent and unsafe behavior, family problems, poor performance and more. Like other chronic conditions, mental illness can worsen if left untreated, often resulting in crisis events like hospitalization, homelessness, violence, incarceration and suicide. Acknowledging the importance of mental health greatly advances the opportunity to elicit dialogue, provide access to information and support treatment options.

“Mental illness is woven into the fabric of our society, and is often identified as the cause for many societal ills. We must all take responsibility and action to remove the stigma of mental illness and promote early assessment and diagnosis, and the multitude of treatment options and support resources available. The earlier we come together to recognize and treat mental health conditions, the more likely it is that people can recover and return to productively enhancing our workplaces and communities,” states Joy Calloway, president and CEO of New Center Community Services.

About NCCS:
