Major services offered free at  annual men’s health event, no insurance required

DETROIT, MI - Supporting more than 7,000 attendees in the first three years of its Men’s Health Event, the Michigan Institute of Urology (MIU) Men’s Health Foundation will bring men onto the field to “Fight Like a Man” for their health at the 4th Annual Men’s Health Event at Ford Field in Detroit. The Foundation’s goal is to provide health screenings for thousands more Metro Detroit men, including those without health insurance.

The Men’s Health Event 20XIV will be held Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ford Field, Gate G. This free event, developed by doctors, will give men a better understanding of how to stay healthy, screen men for some of the most treatable diseases and to assess their current health, share information about men’s health topics and increase awareness about advances in healthcare.

New this year, attendees can participate in full body workout and yoga sessions on Ford Field. Yoga sessions, led by Detroit Community Yoga, take place from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., while the full body workout class, led by Detroit Tough, occurs from 11 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 1:30 p.m. Additional on-field activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. include the Quarterback Challenge, Pass & Kick and The Drive.

Further, attendees will have the opportunity to kick a field goal on Ford Field and receive a certificate signed by Former Detroit Lion Eddie Murray. Murray will be on the field from 11 a.m. to noon.

The Men’s Health Event will allow men ages 18 and older, even those without access to health insurance, to assess their current health status with a variety of free screenings. In addition to standard vital measurements, blood screenings will test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), testosterone, glucose and cholesterol levels. New this year is rapid result HIV testing, provided by Gospel Against AIDS.

Men who choose to participate in the blood screening tests will receive a copy of their results by mail with an accompanied cover letter explaining the meaning of their values. It is recommended that attendees who wish to participate in the free health screening pre-register to guarantee a blood draw time. Timeslots are available hourly throughout the event. Availability for health screening appointments by walk-ins cannot be guaranteed.

BMI testing, vision screening, body fat percentage assessment, dental screening and oral examinations (available until 2 p.m.), skin cancer screening and hearing screening (available on a limited basis in first-com, first-serve hourly schedule) also will be available. Guests also can visit the “Ask the Doctor” area in which local physicians will be available for one-on-one questions.

In 2013, the MIU Men’s Health Foundation introduced depression screenings at the Men’s Health Event, and this year they are expanding their mental health program with the help of Healthy Detroit, including the National Dialogue on Mental Health and Creating Community Solutions, to provide an open discussion, led by a facilitator, where attendees can talk about mental health concerns and stigmas.

“Despite increased attention to healthcare, many men still do not choose to know about their health, and historically, the medical community has failed overall to educate men in the role of disease prevention and proper health maintenance,” said Michael Lutz, M.D., president of the MIU Men’s Health Foundation and urologist with Michigan Institute of Urology. “Through the MIU Men’s Health event, we are inspiring men to ‘fight like a man’ for their health, and our screenings have saved the lives of men attending our event.”

This family friendly event will feature live music will be provided by The Session Band. Raffle prizes, giveaways and refreshments will be available, in addition to guest speakers and health and sport displays, as well as men’s haircuts by Dorsey School of Beauty. Attendees will also have the chance to win tickets to upcoming Detroit Pistons and Detroit Lions home games.

Supporters of men’s health are encouraged to participate in the Fund-A-Man campaign. A tax-deductible contribution of only $17.13 directly provides the following screenings for one man at the event: prostate-specific antigen, testosterone, glucose and cholesterol.
