OABI Beach Festival releases Paddlerama event schedule & music lineup

DETROIT, MI - OABI Beach Festival, taking place on the shores of Belle Isle Beach, Detroit on Saturday, August 9, 2014 announces the full Paddlerama schedule of events, featuring paddleboard and SUP events for all ages, kayak events as well as the Outdoor Action Company OABI Race, live music, craft beer and local food for everyone to enjoy.

Paddlerama – a series of classes, demonstrations, contests and sprint competitions is open to the general public at noon to 8pm. Paddlerama encourages everyone, no matter the skill level to learn from some of the top athletes in the sport, including three-time Elite Women’s WPA Midwest SUP Points champion, Mary Ridtke and 2013 Maui to Molokai SUP Race champion, Ron St. John. Free SUPs and kayaks will be available for Paddlerama participants, courtesy of Green Veil Outdoor, Great Lakes Surf and Detroit River Sports.

Some of the highlighted events include:
• Intro to SUP - presented by SUP EDU, LLC
o Learn how to SUP correctly with a little help from SUP champions Mary Radtke and Ron St. John. After this class, participants will be able to paddle and talk SUP just like the pros, both on and off the water.

• Kid’s paddle class presented by Great Lakes Surf
o Introduction for paddlers 8 – 14 years old

• SUP Yoga - presented by Urban Surf
o SUP Yoga is the fastest growing sector to the worlds fastest growing sport because its a fun and challenging workout. Yoga techniques and poses will be demonstrated in this on water class giving you a chance to try it out for yourself.

• Intro to Paddlefit - presented by Great Lakes Surf
o PaddleFit combines on-land workouts with stand up paddling training and techniques. Our goal is to provide you with a system that helps you achieve your fitness goals, improve your technique and guide you on your path to a healthy lifestyle.

• SUP Joust presented by Green Veil Outdoor
o Welcoming the warriors to compete for survival. Race toward your competitor and knock off your opponent to win!

• Intro to Kayak presented by Detroit River Sports
o A beginner class teaching equipment and proper technique

• Kayak Games presented by the OABI team
o On water activities including relay races, sprints, and other competitive fun.

• Kayak Belle Isle Tour guided by Detroit River Sports
o Guided tour includes waterways inside the Belle Isle.

“We’re very excited to bring this event to Belle Isle,” says Joe Choma of Green Veil Outdoor. “You don’t have to be an experienced paddler to participate – there is something for everyone in the family and this is your chance to try out a board for the first time, or hone your skills,” he adds.

Once an underground event that began in 2011 as a challenge among the SUP community to test who had the biggest gains over the summer paddle season, The Outdoor Action Company OABI Race is the ultimate test of stamina as paddleboards, kayaks, and crew sculls and shells race around the 7-mile Detroit treasure, Belle Isle. No official points, no technology, just ready, set, go! The race starts and finishes at Belle Isle Beach with the first one to circumnavigate the isle and grab the paddle/trophy keeps it for the year.

OABI attendees will also enjoy an array of craft beer and local foods, as well as live music by The Macpodz, Slow Jam’s resident DJ and Movement Electronic Music Festival veteran, Erno the Inferno, as well as the acoustic tunes of Brian Sheehan.

The cost for Paddlerama and general event admission is $15 in advance and $25 at the door. The cost for the OABI race, Paddlerama and general event admission is $35. Children 12 years old and under are free and must be accompanied by an adult. The OABI race is for moderate to experienced paddlers, while Paddlerama is open to all paddler experience levels.
