ART X Detroit highlights City's flourishing Arts scene with more than  50 free Arts events in 20 cultural venues, April 9-26

National and Community Cultural Leaders and Artists Take Stage with Exciting Panels, Discussions and Artist Talks

DETROIT – Beginning next week, Midtown Detroit and beyond will come alive as the canvas for Art X Detroit: Kresge Arts Experience (AXD), a free celebration of Detroit's thriving arts scene. In the city's remarkable collection of galleries and museums, the public is invited to experience visual art installations, dance, musical and theatrical performances, film screenings, literary readings, workshops and more, featuring the works of the nearly 40 Kresge Eminent Artists and Artist Fellows. AXD is April 9-26 and staged over three weekends (April 9–12, 16–19, 25–26) at nearly 20 venues throughout the city.

Arts enthusiasts will experience works and performances at Detroit cultural institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and Detroit Film Theatre (DFT), and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, among others. New venues include the Detroit Opera House, the Garden Theater, Cinema Detroit, Salt & Cedar and Trinosophes.

Alongside works debuted and shared by the Kresge Eminent Artists and Artist Fellows, the festival features an exciting line-up of panels, discussions, and artist talks featuring AXD participating artists, national and community leaders, cultural critics and more. Beginning with a reading and lecture on Thursday, April 9 as part of the AXD Opening Night, audiences are invited to experience over a dozen conversations scheduled throughout the duration of the festival.

LYNNE TILLMAN AND THE STATE OF ARTS AND CULTURAL CRITICISM
Reading & Lecture
Thursday, April 9th (Opening Night) | 5-6:30PM | MOCAD – Café
Novelist, short story writer, cultural critic, and former 2010 KAID panelist Lynne Tillman will read from her book What Would Lynne Tillman Do? Tillman's reading and lecture will be followed by a Q&A, book signing and reception. Reservations suggested.

WHY THE ARTS MATTER: A CONVERSATION ON ART, ENGAGEMENT, AND COMMUNITY
Public Conversation
Saturday, April 18th | 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. | Charles H. Wright Museum - GM Theatre
Art X Detroit welcomes Jane Chu, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, for a public conversation with The Kresge Foundation President & CEO Rip Rapson. Moderated by Juanita Moore (Executive Director, Charles H. Wright Museum), Jane and Rip will discuss why the arts matter and the critical role arts, culture, and creativity play in restoring and animating communities across the country, including Detroit. Please note: This panel has been rescheduled from the time indicated in the printed program.

THE ART OF FOOD SOVEREIGNTY
Panel Discussion
Saturday, April 25th | 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. | MOCAD – Café
Organized by Burnside Farm and Keep Growing Detroit, this panel will explore what food sovereignty is, why it matters, and the creative and artistic ways that urban farmers in Detroit are cultivating a more food sovereign city.

AXD Opening Night
The opening night of Art X Detroit is a free, open-to-the-public, multi-venue celebration on Thursday, April 9, 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. at MOCAD and The N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art. The evening will open with a reading and lecture by cultural critic Lynne Tillman, and includes the opening of the ongoing AXD Visual Arts Exhibition, film screenings and live performances by AXD artists at MOCAD, N’Namdi, DIA Detroit Film Theatre and Detroit Symphony Orchestra Music Box. The ongoing Visual Arts Exhibition at MOCAD, April 9-26, will keep the spirit of Art X alive with selected works from the 2014 Kresge Eminent Artist and fourteen Kresge Artist Fellows, featuring iconic photography, 2D animation, raw meal-making, Impressionist-style paintings, an interactive floor sculpture, mixed-media installations, and much more.

Detroit's flourishing arts scene continues to generate excitement nationally and internationally, and the third edition of AXD features Kresge Eminent Artists, Michigan Opera Theatre founder and acclaimed composer David DiChiera (2013 Eminent Artist) and iconic Detroit photographer and educator Bill Rauhauser (2014 Eminent Artist).

Since 2008, The Kresge Foundation has provided $3 million to honor more than 100 artists living and working in metro Detroit through its Kresge Eminent Artist and Artist Fellowship programs. The programs are administered by Kresge Arts in Detroit at the College for Creative Studies.
