WARREN C. EVANS MEETS REQUIREMENT TO BE ON THE BALLOT, JUDGE RULES

Judge dismisses claims, lawyer says suit was attempt to disenfranchise voters

CANTON, MI - A judge today dismissed claims that sought to disenfranchise voters who have supported Warren C. Evans’ bid to become the next Wayne County Executive.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Richard Colombo on Friday dismissed all claims of the suit that was filed this week to try to thwart Evans bid, and affirmed that Evans met the requirements to be on the ballot.

“This is both a happy day and a frustrating day that we had to do something like this,” said John Pirich, an election law expert and Evans’ attorney. “Warren Evans is absolutely qualified to run for the office of Wayne County executive and the court reaffirmed that.”

Pirich added that the 11th hour filing was about, “disenfranchising voters. They got a little bit of publicity but that’s it.”

Evans, who was not in court for the hearing, said he was glad about the ruling and will continue working hard to earn every vote.

“I’ve never lost sight of this campaign or what this case was really about,” Evans said. “I’m going to continue to talk to the voters and work hard through August 5th.”

A lifelong public servant, Evans has worked and managed through some of the county’s toughest times. As sheriff, he managed a $150-million budget and 1,300 employees. As Detroit Police Chief, he helped to reduce violent crime by 27 percent. He also worked to protect city bus drivers and keep patrons safe. Evans’ efforts include halting foreclosures as sheriff; going after slumlords as an assistant prosecutor, and saving the juvenile detention facility from federal oversight.
