DPS to host NEW four-day “Open Doors ” series Wednesday through Monday, district-wide

Parents who have not yet selected a school will be able to tour ALL schools across the district Wednesday through Monday during regular school hours, with extended hours at 53 schools on Thursday, Sept. 11 until 7 p.m.

Detroit Public Schools will host a NEW four-day “Open Doors ” series inviting parents who have not yet selected a school to tour ANY school across the district during regular school hours.

Beginning today, Wednesday, September 10 through Monday, September 15, all schools will be open for public touring. Special extended hours will be available on Thursday, September 11 until 7 p.m. at 53 select schools. Visit detroitk12.org/enroll for the full list of schools.

This new effort aims to boost enrollment district-wide during the first two weeks of school as some parents may still be in the decision-making stage. All schools will showcase their academic and college/career-track offerings to perspective families.

All schools are now accepting enrollment for available seats for the 2014-2015 school year. Many of the district’s application schools also have available seats and will be open for touring Wednesday through Monday.

Programs at all grade levels include those in Fine and Performing Arts, Bilingual Instruction, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program offerings, Medicine and Science, Aerospace, Design and Alternative Energy, Dual Immersion Bilingual, Communication Arts, Technology, Agriscience, Public Leadership, and others. Included are the state’s only two public single-gender schools.

New enrichment programs offered to DPS students include career track recommendations, Safe Routes to and from school, interscholastic athletics, career/technical centers, and college scholarships. DPS graduates were able to earn more than $137 million in scholarships and grants for the 2013-2014 school year.

The four-day “Open Doors” series is being held in conjunction with Detroit Public Schools’ new “See It Believe It” Retain/Gain Enrollment Campaign launched in July to ensure the district retains all current students and gains new enrollees. The new “See It Believe It” branding seeks to demonstrate the school system’s commitment to providing academic programs and initiatives that families desire, and making strategic decisions to attract and retain families. Ultimately, what the district came to understand is that the public needs to be reminded that amazing things are happening in each and every one of its 97 schools every day; that programs are being offered at Detroit Public Schools that parents can’t get anywhere else; and, if people take the time to visit/explore schools and interact with the students, teachers and administrators in those schools, they will see proof of this progress.
