speaks

Detroiters
on jobs,
foreclosures,
and
politics

After
returning
from
Haiti,
Rev.
Jesse
Jackson
addressed
the
congregation
at
Central
United
Methodist
Church
in
Detroit.
In
celebration
of the
church's
200th
anniversary
the
civil
rights
leader
stood
side-by-side
with
local
residents
in a
rally
Sunday
afternoon.
U.S.
Congressman
John
Conyers
and
other
prominent
clergy
joined
Jackson
along
with
local
victims
for a
call to
action
focusing
on job
losses,
cuts to
student
loan
funding,
home
foreclosures
and
other
issues
in
Detroit.
"Today
the
scene
has
shifted
from
sitting
in at
lunch
counters
to
sitting
in
shareholders
meetings,"
said
Jackson.
Members
of the
Council
of
Baptist
Pastors
of
Detroit
and
Vicinity
and the
local
branch
of the
National
Association
for the
Advancement
of
Colored
People
attended
the
event.
The Rev.
David
Bullock,
president
of
Rainbow
PUSH-Detroit
and co –
organizer
of the
event
said,
“It is
time for
the
faith
community
to stand
up. We
must
connect
our
religious
belief
to
reality
and
begin to
impact
the
lives of
the
great
citizens
of
Detroit."
Jackson
is
expected
to
attend
the Bank
of
America
shareholders
meeting
Feb. 23
in
Charlotte,
N.C. He
is
president
and
founder
of the
Chicago-based
Rainbow/PUSH
Coalition.
