Rev. Jesse Jackson Jr. speaks to Detroiters on jobs, foreclosures, and politics

Detroit (Tell Us Det) - After returning from Haiti, Rev. Jesse Jackson addressed the congregation at Central United Methodist Church in Detroit. In celebration of the church's 200th anniversary the civil rights leader stood side-by-side with local residents in a rally Sunday afternoon.

U.S. Congressman John Conyers and other prominent clergy joined Jackson along with local victims for a call to action focusing on job losses, cuts to student loan funding, home foreclosures and other issues in Detroit.

"Today the scene has shifted from sitting in at lunch counters to sitting in shareholders meetings," said Jackson.

Members of the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity and the local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People attended the event.

The Rev. David Bullock, president of Rainbow PUSH-Detroit and co – organizer of the event said, “It is time for the faith community to stand up. We must connect our religious belief to reality and begin to impact the lives of the great citizens of Detroit."

Jackson is expected to attend the Bank of America shareholders meeting Feb. 23 in Charlotte, N.C. He is president and founder of the Chicago-based Rainbow/PUSH Coalition.
