THINK DETROIT PAL RUNS FOR DETROIT’S YOUTH

Nonprofit encourages community involvement in Detroit Free Press Flagstar Marathon

(DETROIT) – Once again, Think Detroit PAL will walk and run to provide healthier lifestyles for the city’s young people. Individuals are urged to join the effort by participating in the Detroit Free Press Flagstar Marathon “Run for a Reason” campaign, October 19, 2008.

For every $200 that a participant donates, a child will receive character enrichment, academic support and access to the organization’s sports leagues. And the contributor receives a healthy workout.

“Nearly 12,000 kids are involved with Think Detroit PAL,” said Dan Varner, the nonprofit’s CEO. “So many other young people deserve the same opportunity, but it can only be done through volunteerism and donations.”

Individuals wanting to contribute can register to participate in the following categories:

5k Run/Walk – A 3.1-mile stretch for walkers and runners of any age and ability. Individuals are expected to raise at least $200.
Half Marathon Run/Walk – Runners will cross the Ambassador Bridge and return to Detroit under water through the tunnel. This is the only international marathon in the world. Individuals are expected to raise at least $500.

Marathon – The full 26.2-mile marathon covers downtown Detroit, the city of Windsor and Belle Isle. Participants are expected to raise at least $500.

In 2007 nearly all Think Detroit PAL staff members participated in the marathon, including HOT 102.7’s on-air radio personality Spudd. Runners and walkers raised more than $27,000 for Detroit’s young people while completing over 350 miles.

The Free Press Flagstar Marathon celebrated 30 years last year by offering a marathon run, marathon for wheelers and hand cyclists with disabilities, a half marathon run, a half marathon competitive and non-competitive walk and a 5-person team relay. There was also a 5K fun run, fitness walk and kids mini-marathon.

Named best nonprofit by Crain’s Detroit Business in 2004, Think Detroit PAL has been held up as a model after-school program by First Lady Laura Bush. In addition to its sports leagues, the program provides leadership and academic support to young people. The organization serves 12,000 youths annually with the help of 1,200 volunteer coaches.
