community
involvement
in
Detroit
Free
Press
Flagstar
Marathon
(DETROIT)
– Once
again,
Think
Detroit
PAL will
walk and
run to
provide
healthier
lifestyles
for the
city’s
young
people.
Individuals
are
urged to
join the
effort
by
participating
in the
Detroit
Free
Press
Flagstar
Marathon
“Run for
a
Reason”
campaign,
October
19,
2008.
For
every
$200
that a
participant
donates,
a child
will
receive
character
enrichment,
academic
support
and
access
to the
organization’s
sports
leagues.
And the
contributor
receives
a
healthy
workout.
“Nearly
12,000
kids are
involved
with
Think
Detroit
PAL,”
said Dan
Varner,
the
nonprofit’s
CEO. “So
many
other
young
people
deserve
the same
opportunity,
but it
can only
be done
through
volunteerism
and
donations.”
Individuals
wanting
to
contribute
can
register
to
participate
in the
following
categories:
5k
Run/Walk
– A
3.1-mile
stretch
for
walkers
and
runners
of any
age and
ability.
Individuals
are
expected
to raise
at least
$200.
Half
Marathon
Run/Walk
–
Runners
will
cross
the
Ambassador
Bridge
and
return
to
Detroit
under
water
through
the
tunnel.
This is
the only
international
marathon
in the
world.
Individuals
are
expected
to raise
at least
$500.
Marathon
– The
full
26.2-mile
marathon
covers
downtown
Detroit,
the city
of
Windsor
and
Belle
Isle.
Participants
are
expected
to raise
at least
$500.
In 2007
nearly
all
Think
Detroit
PAL
staff
members
participated
in the
marathon,
including
HOT
102.7’s
on-air
radio
personality
Spudd.
Runners
and
walkers
raised
more
than
$27,000
for
Detroit’s
young
people
while
completing
over 350
miles.
The Free
Press
Flagstar
Marathon
celebrated
30 years
last
year by
offering
a
marathon
run,
marathon
for
wheelers
and hand
cyclists
with
disabilities,
a half
marathon
run, a
half
marathon
competitive
and
non-competitive
walk and
a
5-person
team
relay.
There
was also
a 5K fun
run,
fitness
walk and
kids
mini-marathon.
Named
best
nonprofit
by
Crain’s
Detroit
Business
in 2004,
Think
Detroit
PAL has
been
held up
as a
model
after-school
program
by First
Lady
Laura
Bush. In
addition
to its
sports
leagues,
the
program
provides
leadership
and
academic
support
to young
people.
The
organization
serves
12,000
youths
annually
with the
help of
1,200
volunteer
coaches.
