Old News Boys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit raised near $400K of $1.1M goal

Contributions to ensure “No Kiddie Without a Christmas” accepted through Jan. 31

DETROIT - As of today, the Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit has raised $398,874 representing over 36% of its 2017 fundraising goal of $1.1 million, which the group hopes to meet by the end of its fiscal year on January 31, 2018.

Of the total amount raised to date, $46,101 was raised through the 104th Annual Detroit Goodfellows’ Sales Day on November 27. Hundreds of Detroit Goodfellows, Detroit police officers and Detroit firefighters sold a special “Goodfellow edition” of The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press in various locations throughout the city.

“The Detroit community has again shown up for the kids. While contributions from yesterday’s sales day, along with the donations received throughout the year, will help us reach our fundraising goal, it also exemplifies the heart of our city and our people,” said Dr. Mike Jennings, president of the Detroit Goodfellows. “Our group could not ensure ‘no kiddie without a Christmas’ without the public’s concern and generosity, and we really appreciate all the monies entrusted to us to do so.”

With all donations collected, Detroit Goodfellows will distribute 34,000 gift packages through Detroit police precincts to needy children in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Harper Woods and River Rouge from Dec. 4 - 16. This year 9,000 hand-dressed dolls will be given to little girls aged 4 - 9 as part of the Goodfellow gift packages containing books, warm clothes, dental health kits, toys and candy. Four-year-old boys will receive a stuffed animal as part of theirs. The packages will be provided to children whose names were submitted by public, private, parochial and charter school officials. It is estimated that two out of every three Detroit public schoolchildren receives a Detroit Goodfellows holiday gift box.
