• The
Mack-Ashland
Community
project
underscores
Northeast
Guidance
Center’s
commitment
to
building
a
stronger
and
healthier
community
• Phase
two of
the
Mack-Ashland
Community
project
includes
development
of 28
townhomes
available
to
low-income
Detroit
residents

DETROIT,
MI -
Northeast
Guidance
Center (NEGC),
in
partnership
with
Southwest
Solutions
and the
Michigan
State
Housing
Development
Authority
(MHSDA),
today
broke
ground
on phase
two of
the
Mack-Ashland
Community
project,
a
low-income
housing
development
located
on
Detroit’s
east
side.
The
project
includes
development
of 28
townhomes
available
to
Detroit
residents
who are
chronically
mentally
ill,
victims
of
domestic
violence,
veterans
and
youth
aging
out of
foster
care.
“The
Mack-Ashland
Community
is a
tangible
representation
of
NEGC’s
aim of
building
communities
one
family
at a
time”
said
Sherry
McRill,
president
of NEGC.
We are
extremely
pleased
to
collaborate
with our
community
partners
in
bringing
permanent,
supportive
housing
to
Detroit’s
east
side.
Supportive
housing
is a
desirable
solution
to the
housing
stability
problem
that
ensures
individuals
and
families
have
appropriate
support
services
such as
case
management,
substance
use
disorder
and
mental
health
treatment
to help
with
their
successful
recovery
journey
towards
mental
wellness
while
reducing
care
costs.”
Phase
one of
the
Mack-Ashland
Community
project
was
completed
in 2013
with
development
of an
apartment
building
containing
12
studio
units,
18
one-bedroom
units,
six
two-bedroom
units
and a
trio of
three-bedroom
units.
Currently,
all
units
are
occupied.
Southwest
Solutions
is the
real
estate
developer
for both
phases
and
worked
with
MHSDA to
secure
close to
$700,000
in 9
percent
Low-Income
Housing
Tax
credits
towards
construction
of the
townhomes.
“Southwest
Solutions
is
deeply
privileged
to be a
collaborative
partner
with
NEGC and
U-SNAP-BAC,
utilizing
our real
estate
development
expertise
to help
our
eastside
Detroit
partners
attain
their
affordable
housing
and
community
development
goals,”
said Tim
Thorland,
executive
director
of
Southwest
Housing
Solutions.
“There
is a
critical
shortage
of
quality
affordable
housing
in our
city,
and the
Mack-Ashland
project
is an
important
contribution
to help
address
this
need.”
“Breaking
ground
on this
project
serves
as a
reminder
that
with
each
investment
in
Detroit
we are
giving
hope to
individuals
and
families
who rely
on MHSDA
for
safe,
decent
affordable
housing,”
said
MSHDA
Executive
Director
Kevin
Elsenheimer.
“It’s a
thrill
to work
again
with
trusted
partners
Northeast
Guidance
Center
and
Southwest
Solutions
to see a
second
phase of
Mack-Ashland
developed,
and we
look
forward
to the
possibilities
these
single
family
homes
will
soon
open for
their
new
residents.”
Construction
of the
new
units
will
begin in
the fall
of 2016
with
occupation
beginning
in the
spring
of 2017.
