New Center Community Services Host 10th Annual 5k Walk/Run with Walk Ambassador Kam Carman

DETROIT - New Center Community Services (NCCS) will host its 10th Annual 5k Walk/Run, Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., on the Detroit Riverwalk. This year’s Walk Ambassador will be 100.3 WNIC radio co-host Kam Carman.

Local chefs and food vendors will also be on-site providing healthy food samples for participants. This year’s event will begin with a morning warm up & stretch session provided by Go! Smoothie’s owner and holistic health coach Callie Bradford. Proceeds from the walk will support NCCS’s goal of breaking the “cycle of trauma” being witnessed in our community’s schools. Funds will support deploying mental health staff in classrooms and school buildings to train and support educators and administrators in recognizing and dealing with trauma, experienced, unfortunately, by many of our community’s school children.

“With all the tumult in our various school systems, having to engage children and families that are dealing with traumatic situations makes educators’ job even more challenging. New Center wants to be the expert support and service provider to these school systems children and families” said New Center Community Services, CEO Joy D. Calloway.

As a leader in mental health services, NCCS is committed to providing information and education to increase awareness of mental health issues in Detroit, Highland Park and Wayne County. These communities have a high concentration of poverty, trauma and vulnerability – all of which impact the prevalence of mental illness. STANDING UP FOR MENTAL HEALTH helps reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and helps more individuals receive comprehensive treatment.

The route will take runners and walkers 3.1 miles around the Detroit Riverwalk –. Drink stations will be provided along the route. All children under age 10 walk free with a registered adult walker.
