About the Dr. Benjamin Carson School of Science & Medicine
This fall, Detroit Public Schools opened the brand new Dr. the Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine and the Detroit Collegiate Prep – A Diplomas now/Michigan Future High School. The school, which opened initially for ninth graders and which will add a grade each year through grade 12, offers a college-prep curriculum with unique experiences for students interested in science and medicine.

The Dr. Benjamin Carson School of Science & Medicine seeks to prepare students for healthcare careers through a rigorous high school curriculum, supplemented by college courses and internships.

The school, named for the acclaimed Detroit-born, African-American pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson, is partnering with key institutions including, Detroit Receiving Hospital and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and will be reaching out to other health care providers.

Students will learn through project-based learning, seminar/mentoring relationships with teachers, and small group study, allowing them to have many opportunities to forge strong relationships with teachers. Expectations of professional demeanor will be supported by a behavior code and zero tolerance policies.

A significant component of each student’s experience will be the support of college-preparation infused in the school culture.
The unique opportunities include:

• A Summer Bridge Program designed to provide orientation, assess and build skills, and forge relationships and friendships prior to the start of school.
• An Opening Day welcome by community partners and professionals, followed up by regular visits with professionals in the science and medical fields.
• A White Coat Ceremony to celebrate the success of their freshman year.
• Opportunities for students to take classes at partner sites, shadow partners, and participate in internships.
• Summer partnership opportunities (20 days each summer for enrichment or intervention.)
• Teachers will have a flexible schedule allowing for time to shadow professionals and participate in externships to enhance the real-world components of the curriculum.

In Grades 9 and 10, students will explore career options, with a focused professional career-oriented curriculum in Grades 11 and 12.

These experiences will include: Summer exposure to college campuses; College entrance exam preparation beginning in Grade 9, and including ACT Boot Camp in Grade 11; Internships with Partners to create relationships among adults and students while providing real-world experiences and creating opportunities for students to see themselves in careers in science and medicine and learn about opportunities beyond college; Advanced Placement Courses; Guidance Counseling to develop students’ long-term goals and commitments; and College Transition and after-high school College Support personnel who will ensure all students apply for college, scholarships and financial aid, and once on campus have a safety net.
