partnership
with DPS
reading
program
during
inaugural
luncheon

A truly
diverse
and
dynamic
group of
500
women
gathered
at the
Book
Cadillac
Wednesday
for the
First
Lady of
Detroit
Luncheon,
the
event
launched
Yvette
Bing’s
official
partnership
with the
DPS
Reading
Corp. In
lending
her
support
to the
cause of
literacy,
the
First
Lady,
said
“Reading
is the
true
liberator
of our
society.”
During
her
remarks,
Yvette
Bing
said she
wants to
see
positive
changes
in how
Detroit
is
perceived
from the
efforts
of the
Reading
Corps.
Yvette
Bing, a
product
of
Detroit
Public
Schools
pledged
her
effort
Wednesday
for the
DPS
Reading
Corps. She
cited
prominent
Detroiters
from her
old
neighborhood,
including
Police
Chief
Warren
Evan and
Operations
Manager
Charlie
Beckman,
as
examples
of the
type of
students
DPS can
produce.
The
First
Lady
also
recognized
her
family
members
in
attendance;
she is
the
mother
of three
adult
daughters
and a
graduate
of Wayne
State.
"Detroit
Public
Schools
allowed
me to
get an
excellent
education,
and I
would
just
like to
see that
happen
for our
young
students
today,"
Bing
said.
The
keynote
luncheon
speaker,
DPS Financial
Emergency
Manager
Robert
Bobb
said,
"Not
only are
you
going to
be the
first
lady for
the city
of
Detroit,
you are
going to
end up
being a
first
mom for
a lot of
these
kids as
well."

In
attendance
to
support
the
Yvette
Bing was
a Who’s
Who of
prominent
women,
from
former
First
Lady
Trudy
Archer
to
Florine
Marks of
Weight
Watchers
and
Focus
co-founder
Eleanor
Josaitis.
Carmen
N'Namdi,
founder
of
Nataki
Talibah
Schoolhouse
commented
on the
impressive
turnout
of women
from
all walks of
life.
The
keynote
luncheon
speaker,
DPS Financial
Emergency
Manager
Robert
Bobb,
said the
tally of
Reading
Corps
volunteers
has
reached
the
4,000
plus
mark. As
result
he says
every
Pre-K
child in
DPS will
have
access
to a
reading
tutor.
Bobb
said,
"We were
literally
jumping
for joy
in the
Fisher
Building,
because
we need
her,"
Bobb
said
when he
learned
of
Bing's
support.
"We need
the
first
lady. We
need all
of you
to
support
her."
The
luncheon
was
hosted
by the
Mayor
Dave
Bing
Inaugural
Committee.
Committee
co-chairs
Sarah
Earley,
Lisa
Lewis
and
Loran
Moten
also
were in
attendance
and
provide
brief
remarks.
More
than
3,600
people
already
have
volunteered
to give
more
than
430,000
hours of
their
time
each
year
helping
teach
students
how to
read.
