A truly diverse and dynamic group of 500 women gathered at the Book Cadillac Wednesday for the First Lady of Detroit Luncheon, the event launched Yvette Bing’s official partnership with the DPS Reading Corp. In lending her support to the cause of literacy, the First Lady, said “Reading is the true liberator of our society.” During her remarks, Yvette Bing said she wants to see positive changes in how Detroit is perceived from the efforts of the Reading Corps.

Yvette Bing, a product of Detroit Public Schools pledged her effort Wednesday for the DPS Reading Corps. She cited prominent Detroiters from her old neighborhood, including Police Chief Warren Evan and Operations Manager Charlie Beckman, as examples of the type of students DPS can produce. The First Lady also recognized her family members in attendance; she is the mother of three adult daughters and a graduate of Wayne State.

"Detroit Public Schools allowed me to get an excellent education, and I would just like to see that happen for our young students today," Bing said.

The keynote luncheon speaker, DPS Financial Emergency Manager Robert Bobb said, "Not only are you going to be the first lady for the city of Detroit, you are going to end up being a first mom for a lot of these kids as well."

Bobb said, "We were literally jumping for joy in the Fisher Building, because we need her," Bobb said when he learned of Bing's support. "We need the first lady. We need all of you to support her."
