Detroit
--
Detroit
Police
Chief
James
Barren
named
Jamel
Cameron
Turner
as a
person
of
interest
in the
shooting
of seven
teens at
a
westside
bus stop
Tuesday
afternoon.
Turner
turned
himself
in at 3
p.m.
today at
Detroit
Police
Department's
northwest
precinct.
According
to
witnesses,
two men,
either
wearing
masks or
using
their
shirts
to cover
their
faces,
shot at
the
victims,
Detroit
Police
2nd
Deputy
Chief
Rod
Liggons
said.
This is
not
Turner's
first
brush
with
authorities.
He has
been in
trouble
with the
law
twice
before.
Chief
James
Barron
said
he's had
contact
with
Dearborn
police
for
larceny
and with
Detroit
police
as a
juvenile.
Deputy
Police
Chief
James W.
Tolbert
said
three of
the
victims
remained
hospitalized
Wednesday
with
wounds
that
were not
life-threatening.
He said
police
believe
that
semiautomatic
handguns
were
used.
"Any
time
there is
a
shooting
and we
have
young
people
shot,
it's a
travesty,"
he said.
"We have
to get
our
youth to
understand
that
conflict
resolution
isn't
picking
up a
gun."
Tolbert
added
that the
police
are
instituting
a
"safe-routes-to-school
program."
In a
statement
released
Wednesday,
Wayne
County
Prosecutor
Kym
Worthy
said, "I
have
never
understood
why it
takes a
crisis
like
multiple
children
shot in
this
community
for
people
to get
outraged;
for
people
to say,
'Enough!';
for
everyone
to
really
sit up
and pay
attention."
Worthy
went on
to say,
"Is one
child
shot
enough?
Apparently
not.
That
happens
frequently
in
Detroit
and in
other
places
in Wayne
County.
We see a
child
shot
down on
the news
and we
take
another
bite of
our
cereal.
We are
that
immune
to
violence
in this
town."
One
other
person
was
arrested
at the
scene of
the
shooting
Tuesday,
but does
not
believe
that
person
is one
of the
shooters,
The
person
arrested
may hold
important
information
on the
case.
Investigators
are
still
seeking
out two
more
people
in
connection
with the
shooting.
