youth
summer
enrichment
programs
for
Metro
Detroit
Programs
include
chess
camp,
youth
theater,
construction
internships,
fireworks
events
and more
DETROIT
-
UAW-Ford
has
announced
a series
of
summer
enrichment
programs
that
will
provide
meaningful
learning
opportunities
for
metro
Detroit
children
of all
ages.
The
programs
begin
June 21
through
August
12 and
include
a
variety
of
educational,
social
and
volunteerism
activities.
The
announcement
was made
today by
UAW-Ford
Vice
President
Jimmy
Settles.
“One of
our
chief
principles
in the
UAW-Ford
mission
is to
give
back to
the
communities
in which
our
members
live,
work and
play,”
said
Settles.
“We are
proud
that our
efforts
include
providing
meaningful
programs
to help
children
reach
their
fullest
potential
while
helping
them
have a
little
fun
along
the
way.”
UAW-Ford
has made
available
summer
programming
for
metro
Detroit
children,
and
played
an
integral
role in
helping
to
provide
both
educational
enrichment
and safe
recreational
activities.
Expanding
upon its
summer
youth
programs
for the
past
four
years,
UAW-Ford
also
provides
funding
for
extra-curricular
activities
at
select
Detroit
Public
Schools,
which
now
offers
swimming,
chess,
golf,
financial
literacy,
etc. to
students
and
community
residents.
The
2016
UAW-Ford
summer
programs
include:
•
June 21-
July 21
– Marcus
Garvey
Summer
Camp: In
its
third
consecutive
year,
UAW-Ford
proudly
presents
its
five-week
summer
camp,
taking
place at
Marcus
Garvey
Academy.
Metro
Detroit’s
K-8
youth
will
learn
from
certified
instructors
and
participate
in
weekly
field
trips.
Attendees
also
will
engage
in
hands-on
activities,
such as:
etiquette,
archery,
golf,
karate,
nutrition,
financial
literacy
and
more. In
the
spirit
of
giving
back,
youth
will
help
beautify
Marcus
Garvey
Academy
by
planting
flowers
and
painting.

are
accepted
through
Fri.,
June 24.
on first
come,
first
serve
basis.
The camp
fee is
$10 per
child.

All-City
Chess
Awards:
In its
fourth
year,
UAW-Ford
will
co-sponsor
the
awards
program,
honoring
Detroit
City
Chess
Club’s
K-12
children
who have
excelled
at
playing
chess.
Radio
personality
John
Mason
from
105.9
FM’s
Mason &
Coco in
the
Morning
will
serve as
guest
speaker.
The
event
will be
held
from
5:30 to
7:15
p.m. at
the
Detroit
Institute
of Arts
located
at 5200
Woodward
Ave.,
Detroit.
Admission
is free
and open
to the
public.

June 27
– July 1
– 3D
Boot
Camp
Work
Internship:
This
newly
added
program
is open
to
incoming
high
school
juniors
and
seniors
who are
interested
in
participating
in a
construction
internship
this
summer.
Nearly
two
dozen
participants
will
learn
essential
workplace
skills,
financial
training,
safety
and
career
paths in
construction.
The
program
will
culminate
with a
meeting
between
participants
and
prospective
employers.
The
internship
program
will be
held
from
8:30
a.m. to
4 p.m.
at
UAW-Ford’s
NPC
Building.
Upon
completion,
participants
will
receive
a
certificate.

July 11
–
August 5
– Boys
Theater
of
Detroit
Camp: In
its
third
year,
the Boys
Theater
Camp
will
teach
youth
the
essential
elements
of
acting.
During
the
four-week
program,
participants
will
build
strong
performance,
public
speaking
and
communication
skills.
The camp
is open
to
children
ages 9
to17 and
will be
held
from 8
a.m. to
4 p.m.
at
UAW-Ford’s
NPC
Building.
The
troupe’s
final
production
will be
held on
August 5
at 2
p.m.,
featuring
“Labor
and
Henry
Ford’s
$5/day
work
wage.”
Admission
is free
and open
to the
public.

Detroit
City
Chess
Camp: In
its
fifth-year,
the
National
Chess
Master
James
Canty
III will
conduct
educational
classes
at this
year’s
summer
chess
camp for
intermediate
to
advanced
chess
players.
The
program,
which is
open to
children
of 12 to
18 years
old,
will be
held
from 8
a.m. to
4 p.m.
located
on the
3rd
Floor at
UAW-Ford
NPC
building,
151 W.
Jefferson
Ave,
Detroit.

Leadership
Summit:
Midnight
Golf

engage
in a
skill-building
intensive
weekend,
during
which
they

learn
leadership

professionals
and
mentors.
UAW-Ford

Programs
Center
will be
sponsoring
a trip
to the
Walter
and May
Reuther
UAW
Family
Education
Center
in
Onaway,
Michigan,
August
5-7,
2016 for
program
participants.
Approximately
144
youth
will
attend.
